It is a laxative administered by way rectally. It triggers a contraction of the rectum which allows the evacuation of the stool. It is used in the treatment of constipation, especially when stools accumulate in the rectum and the repeated pushes do not allow to evacuate them. It is also used to prepare the rectum before an endoscopic examination (rectoscopy). Laxatives administered by way rectal should not be used without medical advice prolonged: they may prevent the normal reflex expulsion of stool.
